ASNEMGE National Society Survey 2009/2010– A summary

The interim results of the 2009-2010 National Society Survey were presented to Representatives of the National Societies at our annual Extraordinary Meeting on January 23, 2010. The final report arising from the Survey is now available on the ASNEMGE website at www.asnemge.org. The overarching theme of this first survey was Annual Meetings and methods of communication. ASNEMGE Council hopes that you will find it useful to compare your Society with others.

Discussion with National Society Representatives in January raised several important points that can now be developed. Firstly, we would like to inform members about other National Society Annual Meetings, including information on dates, scientific content and registration. Secondly, we wish to extend the invitation for those National Societies with Clinical Guidelines written in English to add them to a Guideline Library on the website. We will be contacting your National Society shortly about these two initiatives. We are aware that the Survey needs to evolve and remain relevant to National Society needs so any further feedback on questions and content would be gratefully received by the ASNEMGE Secretariat at info@asnemge.org.

National Scholar Award

ASNEMGE are proud to announce the opening of the National Scholar Award Scheme, in conjunction with the UEGF Scientific Committee, at UEGW Barcelona 2010. This initiative is designed to encourage and develop young researchers from all ASNEMGE-affiliated National Societies by providing recognition of research excellence and allowing networking with other research-active Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists across Europe and the rest of the World.

An Award will be available to the highest scoring abstract from each ASNEMGE-affiliated Country submitted, which is presented by a young (< 35 years) trainee Researcher, ideally studying for a higher degree. Award winners will be highlighted in the main UEGW Programme and will gain admittance to all ASNEMGE activities at UEGW including the popular Rising Star exchange with the AGA and the Presidential reception. The highest scoring Abstract submitter per Country will be contacted in order to confirm eligibility details after the Abstract submission deadline (May 14, 2010) later in the year.

» Abstract submission: May 14, 2010
» Early Registration: May 15, 2010

Young Investigator Meeting – Barcelona 2010

Once again ASNEMGE will be hosting a Young Investigator Meeting (YIM) on the occasion of UEGW Barcelona 2010. This one day course, to be held on Sunday 24th of October 2010 at the CCIB Barcelona, is designed for young starting investigators in the fields of clinical and/or basic gastroenterology and hepatology.

This successful course focusing on “Presentation Skills” has been held consecutively for the past 5 years. Joost PH Drenth, the current course director and his faculty provide a highly informative insight into the world of presentations and teach you how to write and present an abstract and will share their personal experiences.

The YIM also provides participants with the ideal environment to exchange views and to socialise. At the joint dinner on the evening prior to the meeting the participants will also have the opportunity to meet with ASNEMGE Council and ASNEMGE Rising Stars 2010.

The people behind the name ASNEMGE – Franco Bazzoli

Franco - Where do you work and what are your clinical and research interests?

I work at the University of Bologna Policlinico S.Orsola-Malpighi where I lead a Unit of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy and a Center for Digestive Tumor prevention. The principal aims of my clinical activity are interventional endoscopy for the treatment of premalignant GI lesions or early cancers and for palliation of advanced lesions, and clinical strategies for follow up and surveillance of subjects at risk for various GI cancers. My research interests, after an initial period in the bile acid and gallstone disease field, have focused over the last two decades on diagnosis and therapy of Helicobacter pylori infection and familial susceptibility of colon cancer. In addition, recently, we are working on epidemiology of upper digestive tract diseases and symptoms in the general population.

What do you most enjoy about your role with ASNEMGE?

ASNEMGE has presented for me a great opportunity to work for European Gastroenterology and to meet and work with exceptional colleagues in a special environment of collaboration and friendship. I hope to have been able to contribute to the advancement of ASNEMGE, but what I know for sure is that I have learned a lot from the people I have had around during these years.

As President, what do you see as the main challenges facing ASNEMGE in the coming years?

As a President of ASNEMGE I truly recognize my responsibility to represent the National Societies at the European level and within UEGF in particular, where ASNEMGE also represents the main body of Medical Gastroenterology. ASNEMGE has already played a pivotal role by leading the formation of fEMGA – “forum of European Medical Gastroenterology Associations” and I believe that ASNEMGE should now continue along this line and pursue the formation of a European Gastroenterology Association within UEGF, that should continue to be the coordinative and federative organization for Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Hepatology in Europe.
