ASNEMGE activities
ASNEMGE which is the European organisation that represents national societies of gastroenterology in Europe and the Mediterranean region, thereby representing more than 22,000 individuals. ASNEMGE’s principle activities are educational focusing particularly on skills training via intensive workshops, support of national meetings, postgraduate courses and schools of gastroenterology. Specific activities are as follows:
  1. Regional postgraduate courses, attached to national meetings rotating through 11 European regions every 3 years.
  2. Skills training courses aimed at young or would be investigators and focused on
    1. Developing research proposals
    2. Presentational skills
These take the course of weekend courses held in ASNEMGE headquarters in Vienna Abbreviated modules are also held at regional postgraduate meetings, the spring school of gastroenterology and at UEGW
    3. Bi-annual postgraduate courses, organised collaborative with EAGE (European Association of Gastroenterology). A two day course is held at UEGW. Standalone spring course aimed particularly but not exclusively at young trainees is held in the spring. It is intended to develop these two meetings to a capacity of 500-1000 participants.
    4. Training assistance and advice. ASNEMGE maintains and advice centre for young investigators, helping to link them with suitable training based upon an approved list of training centres. This includes clinical and research training.

Work on behalf of UEGF
Hitherto, the goals of UEGF and its constituent 7 sisters have been potentially competitive. A new principle of subsidiarity has been established so that the schemes described above as well as others to be commissioned will be carried out on behalf of UEGF and with UEGF educational funding. In this context, ASNEMGE already acts collaboratively with UEGF, developing schemes for promotion of individuals and societies from across Europe which are then incorporated into UEGF activities. This includes the established Rising Stars in Gastroenterology scheme and the soon to be launched ‘Best of the National Societies’ scheme that aims to highlight presentations by investigators at a relatively early stage in their academic development.

Partnership with Industry
To maximise these developments, ASNEMGE now seeks partnership support with industry and others in two principle areas:
  1. Organisation of meetings as above.
  2. Establishment of training fellowships. In particular we would like to be able to offer the most promising participants in our young investigator courses the opportunity to train for a ‘pump priming’ year at a recognised training centre in Europe (this may include research laboratories of a pharmaceutical company).
The partnership schemes we would like to consider are:
  1. Long term (3-5 years) core support that will enable mutual planning of several meetings per annum.
  2. Ad-hoc support for individual meetings.
  3. Sponsorship of named training fellowships.
The meetings fall into the following categories:
  1. Stand alone skills training or post graduate meetings.
  2. Addition of a post graduate course to a national society meeting.
  3. The Spring and Autumn postgraduate course organised collaboratively with EAGE.
  4. In addition, it would be possible to organise an academic course in conjunction with a separate industry meeting (both could themselves also be associated with a national society meeting).

Principles
  1. At any ASNEMGE meeting there will be no promotional content to the meeting, as legislated by standard international guidelines for the pharmaceutical industry and for the granting of continuing medical educational approval.
  2. Overall, ASNEMGE’s annual output and the content of individual meetings will be balanced and concern relevant and important topics.
  3. The final decision on individual content will be exclusively be that of ASNEMGE.
  4. ASNEMGE will arrange full CME credits for all meetings.
  5. ASNEMGE will apply for UEGF/EU funding support in addition to contribution from industry.
  6. The level of industry support will relate to whether it is exclusive or shared it the extent to which exhibition space is made available.
^

Partnership Arrangements
Beyond the above constraints, ASNEMGE encourages a mutual approach between ASNEMGE and its partners in respect of:
  1. Identification of good speaks and topics.
  2. Identification of delegates to attend the meeting.
  3. Meeting organisation.

Benefits to partners
Our proposals will be very attractive to the pharmaceutical industry at a time when there are increasing constraints on activity. Whilst final decisions are based upon the principles outlined above, ASNEMGE will be sympathetic to the needs of industry in terms of topics, speakers and audience. The benefits to our partners thus include.
  1. Visibility at major European meetings.
  2. Association with non promotional meeting profiles.
  3. Mechanism for contact with opinion leaders, emerging rising stars and young investigators.
  4. Mechanism for incidental contact with networks of clinical trialists.
  5. Partnership helps to gain CME credits for join meetings.
  6. Direct participation by industry colleagues in training programmes is welcomed provided it is non promotional.
Provision of places for the pharmaceutical industry in training courses, subject to a reasonable fee and a balance in participants between academic and industry trainees.
